A Word About eBay's DSR/ SELLER RATINGS for all buyers to read!

HELP KEEP YOUR FAVORITE SELLERS ON EBAY!! PLEASE READ!

I have been selling on ebay for years now... what started out as an enjoyable venue to participate in has turned in to a convoluted mess of change- changes made by eBay executives out to line their pockets in an economic down turn. For you buyers out there, this doesn't affect you. Well, I guess it does- because as eBay begins to hike our fees and suspend us for low DSR's - it does affect the buyers because the cost of the products they shop for will go up, and sooner or later there will be fewer and fewer sellers to do business with.

The most recent eBay debacle is the suspension rule for low DSR's or "Detailed Seller Ratings". You- the buyers are given the option of leaving 1-5 stars as a way to rate the transaction between yourself and the seller. According to eBay, leaving a 4 for an for the description is "accurate", leaving a 4 for communication is "satisfied", leaving a 4 for shipping quickly is "quickly" and leaving a 4 for shipping/handling charges is "reasonable". Sound good to you? Well, not according to eBay. Starting November 1st 2008, all sellers with a lower than 4.3 DSR on ANY of the above categories will be suspended from eBay. So those sellers who have "Satisfied" customers, ship "quickly", describe their product "accurately" and have "reasonable" shipping & handling charges will no longer be able to sell to you, me or anyone else. So basically, giving any seller less than a 5 star rating can put that seller out of business.

If nothing else, this has all of us (sellers) in a panic. Ebay does NOT educate the buyer on the feedback system, or their rules for DSR's - I buy on eBay all the time, and I've left 4's and 5's when I've been perfectly happy with a transaction, not realizing that I'm helping put this seller out of business. It's sad- it makes no sense- if receiving 4's means you are a bad seller, then the buyers need to be made aware of this when they leave the feedback instead of being mislead by the ratings labeled as "accurate, satisfied, and reasonable" which ultimately translates to SUSPENSION.

Check out this link...
http://leavingfeedback.com/page2.html

"Unfortunately, the reality is that any rating lower than 5 's can have a significant negative impact on sellers and the eBay community as a whole because eBay has structured the system to reward sellers with over a 4.5 average, and to penalize sellers with under a 4.5 average."

I urge each of you, if you buy on eBay - please please please try to communicate with the seller if there are problems with a transaction before leaving your feedback and ratings. Keep in mind, that often times problems can be resolved and if the seller is unaware of an issue, and hasn't had the chance to refund or correct an error- your DSR rating can put them out of business.

Melissa,
You are a good woman to be sticking with eBay as long as you have through all of these new policies... you must have the patience of a Saint! :)

I wish eBay would wake up and realize that they are giving their marketplace a one-way ticket down the toilet...

This is just getting so ridiculous! Seriously... what are they thnking?

It seems like a gentle shove from eBay to migrate away from them and focus more on doing your own thing.

The rules are always changing to the point nobody can keep up! I was suspended, found
www.suspended-from-ebay.com and got back on. I can't control the shipping cost and I get the blame. The rating system is the worst and the fact we cannot leave negs for buyers who do not pay or leave us negs for stupid reasons is crazy, too much control on their part.

I know girls... and now with the rules of not accepting any form of mailed paper paments - all of our buyers are forced to pay via paypal. I'm wondering if that will drive buyers away?

This blog caught my attention, as I sell CTMH scrapbooking supplies on eBay and was just banned last night for a low DSR rating. I have 100% positve feedback and only low (4.1) DSR in the shipping charges category. So now I'm sitting on product that I can't sell... ever?! I will check out the website mentioned above, though. Thanks for the info, and for letting me vent. :)

I have been a powerseller on Ebay since 1998. I charge a flat fee of $7.00 for whatever I sell on Ebay. I sell baseball cards ranging from 10 bucks to as high as 30,000. I was just banned 20 minutes ago for a DSR rating of 4.1. I have been doing this same thing for 10 years on Ebay & have NEVER had a negative feedback. Plus Ebay changed to require Paypal which takes 3% right out of me. My fees to Paypal and EBay last month were nearly $4,000.00. So if you are an Ebay shareholder, and they don't want me to sell, obviously they are morons...sell your stock before they scare everybody away.

Oh, and I just looked at my little dumb seller dashboard...my year to date in sales is $276,941.00. And they don't want me to sell on there...freakin' morons. Thanks for letting me vent. Please send nurse for stomach pumping...have to drink this away.

DSRs are completely bogus. Ebay pulls a seller’s DSRs out of thin air. DSRs DO NOT reflect the numbers buyers actually leave.

Ebay arbitrarily decides each month how many 5%, 15%, and 20% discounts they want to hand out. Ebay then fudges each seller’s DSRs to go with the number of discounts handed out.

So Ebay adjusts an actual 4.8 to a 4.7. Whatever Ebay needs to ensure only so many sellers get a discount that month.

Wow...just stumbled upon your blog and saw this...Ebay are complete & utter morons, they have trashed Ebay in Australia with all this nonsense of Paypal only and no longer able to leave negatives etc etc etc, good to see they have yet come up with another boneheaded idea. Hmm yet another reason to leave Ebay once and for all...Quite a lot of the scrapbooking girls have gone off ebay here and now sell through their blogs & their own dot com sites...Ebay/Paypal are thieving dogs and do not deserve our loyalty and most definately don't deserve our profits.

Ya, I have a 4.82 rating in all areas and was restricted to selling 1 item, or 26 Dollars in weekly sales.
I was told this would be in effect until my ratings went higher, I asked them how I was supposed to do that when only being allowed to sell 1 item a week. the response was that I could spend the time working on my weak areas as it could be 6 months or more before I can list like I used to.
My suggestion for ALL sellers is to start setting up extra seller accounts just for the day you get restricted for something silly

Thank you for understanding this. You sound like the buyer we all want. The other thing I wanted to point out is that eBay flat out lies when they say that the ratings are anonymous. Totally not, they themselves provide the tools for sellers to view exactly who left what. Despicable way to treat customers imo.
